Glass benefits

One Material, many options

Glass is an essential part of our all-day life. The ancient Egyptians already realised the advantages of this versatile material and used glass as jars and jewellery. This did not change over the centuries. Today, glass is used for even more purposes than ever. However, what exactly is glass?

One Material, many options

Glass is produced in a melting process. Different raw materials are necessary, mainly quartz sand, soda (a salt mineral) and lime. Depending on the type of end-product, these raw materials are mixed in different ratios.

At a temperature of over 1,600 degrees Centigrade, the components melt and become a stiff glass melt which can be randomly formed in any desired shape at a temperature of approx. 1,000 degrees Centigrade – without tearing, breaking or losing its substance! Plus, the glass cools down relatively fast and stays in its given shape without any change. This fact makes glass so changeable and versatile.

However, not only the processing of glass has many advantages. Glass stays in shape almost “stubbornly”, is extremely resistant. Wind and weather do no harm, just as great cold or heat. It is an absolutely high-tech-capable product, e.g. it transfers data with incredible speed in fibre optic cables.

Nevertheless, glass has its most significant advantages as a packaging material. It is absolutely gas-tight, neutral in taste, and does not interact with other materials or substances. These excellent characteristics have made glass a sought-after packaging for food, drinks or cosmetics.

Glass is also almost unbeatable when it comes to environmental protection. It is 100-percently recyclable! Used glass is simply melted and then processed for new glass products – without losing any of its material characteristics or its quality. Consequently, there is no waste or surplus which cannot be used anymore. There is no question that we also use this recycling process at Noelle + von Campe!
